From the News | Whole Foods, China Food Safety, Future of Food, GMO

Here are four things I’m paying attention to in the food world, and I think you should too:

  • Whole Foods Layoffs – Big news in the food and organic world this week. Whole Foods is laying off 1500 workers. There are lots of reasons why, but the one that occurs to me is that Whole Foods is no longer the only player in the organic world. You can now get reasonably priced organic products at your local big box store.
  • Food Safety in China – rat being sold as lamb, heavy use of pesticides, decades old frozen meat are a few of the stories about unsafe food in China. Can new laws make people safe? Will China’s new food safety rules work?
  • What is the future of food? Is it indoor vertical farming? – Popular Science’s lead article this month is on the Future of Food.
  • Food Movie – Consumed is an interesting concept – a thriller set amid the complexity of the GMO debate. The website isn’t as informative as I’d like. Also it isn’t being covered by the mainstream media and is not in local theaters. You can request a screening.
